Buy Only What You Need
Buy Only What You Need And Only What You Can Use
Buying only what you need and only what you can use means being careful not to buy something that you most likely will throw away without EVER using. This is particularly relevant to modern shopping and the purchase of food. There are so many offers in the shops nowadays for BOGOF (Buy One Get One Free) offers, and big discounts and incentives for bulk buys that we can be tempted to buy more than we need because it looks like a bargain and a good way to save money.
The problem is, of course, that when we buy something that we need and use and then throw most of it away we are just wasting our hard-earned money. Sometimes it is more economical to buy smaller quantities and use it all, trather than looking for the discount and buying more that will eventually get wasted.
All food and consumables now have expiry dates, or sell-by dates marked on them. Be careful to check these, and at least have an idea of whether you can use the quantity of product you are buying within the expiry date. This will mean less waste for you, and less thrown away unused.
If you do buy in bulk (which can be a very good way to save money fast) make sure you pay good attention to how your bulk produce will be stored. Follow the guidelines or instructions for temperature, humidity and air-tighness, for example, so that when you eventually come to use your bulk purchase, perhaps several months later, it is in good condition.
Buying only what you need and can use is also important from an ethical viewpoint. There are many, many people in the world who do not have access to the basics, never mind the luxuries, that we see as a normal part of our everday life. Nowadays, it is inappropriate to waste food, or not be conscious of how there is a global food shortage for millions and millions of people. If you are careful not to waste, and buy just what you need, you are helping all our global resources go further for everyone on our planet.
